Winterthur is a Swiss football club based in Winterthur, Zurich. The club was founded in 1896 and currently plays in the Swiss Challenge League, the second tier of Swiss football. Winterthur has won the Swiss Cup once, in 1968.
History
Winterthur was founded on 18 April 1896 as FC Winterthur. The club's first match was a friendly against FC St. Gallen, which Winterthur lost 0-4. Winterthur joined the Swiss Football Association in 1898 and began playing in the Swiss Serie A, the top tier of Swiss football at the time. Winterthur won its first major trophy, the Swiss Cup, in 1968. The club has also won the Swiss Challenge League twice, in 1996 and 2006. From the 2015/16 season to the 2017/18 season, the club played in the Swiss Super League and since then in the Swiss Challenge League.
