Tottenham Reach Champions League Semi-Finals with Dramatic Away Goals Win

Fernando Llorente's Late Header Secures Aggregate Victory

18 April 2019

Tottenham Hotspur have reached the Champions League semi-finals for the first time in their history after a dramatic 4-3 aggregate victory over Manchester City. Fernando Llorente's header 17 minutes from time secured Tottenham's passage after a breathless match at the Etihad Stadium.

The game had everything, from stunning goals to controversial refereeing decisions. City took the lead in the fourth minute through Raheem Sterling's close-range finish, but Tottenham fought back to equalize through Son Heung-min's deflected effort just before half-time.

City restored their lead in the second half through Bernardo Silva's superb strike, but Llorente's late header leveled the aggregate score and sent the tie to extra time. In the extra half, Sergio Aguero twice put City ahead, but Fernando Llorente equalized twice to send Tottenham through on away goals.

It was a remarkable night for Tottenham, who showed great resilience and determination to overcome a City side that had been in excellent form all season. The result means that Tottenham will face Ajax in the semi-finals, with the first leg to be played at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on 30 April.
